Can't find marriage - John BENNIE/Jean HUNTER
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 01:00 GMT (UK) »
I need some help in finding a marriage between John Bennie (born 1794 Rutherglen) and Jean Hunter (b 1793 Rutherlglen) about 1815, probably in Glasgow. I've tried all sorts of combinations on SP but nothing's come up.

Their son, James Bennie, was born on 18 December 1816 - the entry says "lawful son" which I took to mean that his parents were married?

Thanks, it's a long way from Glasgow but a possibilty. I didn't think of searching for Rennie/Renny.

Looking at SP , the marriage Registers for Rutherglen are 1698-1758 and 1820-1854 , births Registers 1698-1819 and 1819-1854.

Yes.

But that doesn't mean that the record of their marriage has actually survived.

And it's not the Rennie/Hunter couple, because they had three daughters in St Vigeans (the next parish to Arbirlot), one of whom was baptised on 25 July 1816.

You have checked Bin(n)(i)(e)(y), I take it? My Binnys crop up as Beney, Benny, Bennie, Benny, Binnie, Binney etc.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks Ev, that's interesting about the Rutherglen registers - it explains a lot.

Thanks Forfarian, for eliminating the Rennie/Hunter couple. Yes, I did try all the possibilities, except one - my mother inherited Bennie as a middle name and it was often mistranscribed on electoral rolls, except never as Bunnie, thank goodness!

Is Bunnie worse than Bunny or Bunney?

There was a well-known musician named Herrick Bunney - I thought I remembered it as Herrick Bunnie but apparently not.

Jang,
Was this John Bennie married twice?
The OPR shows a number of children born in Rutherglen to John Bennie and Jean Hunter, including Jean b 1826.
The last recorded child was John b 1829.

1841:
Both children named John and Jane appear with a man named John Bennie
This John Bennie married Margaret Frame in 1835 which mean that Jean Hunter possibly died between 1829 and 1835

John Bennie   40
Mrs Margret Bennie   30
Jean Bennie   15*
John Bennie   12*
Grisel Bennie   3
Elisabeth Bennie   8 Mo
James Ratterey   10
Alexr Mcmillan   4
Alexr Marsling   4

At 1851, John Bennie is showing as age 58 and at 1861, he shows as age 64
He died in 1868 aged 76 but, his DC only mentions Margaret Frame.
Parents listed as James Bennie and Jane Young

( the sister of Margaret Frame was married to my relative)

I am fairly confident that he is the same John Bennie,

Yes, Anne, John Bennie and Jean Hunter are my 3g grandparents. Their youngest child was John, born 1829, so Jean died between 1829 and 1835. I haven't been able to find her death either.

My 2g grandfather was their son, William Bennie, born about 1823 - yet another missing Rutherglen record.

James Bennie (husband of Jean Young) was the son of James Bennie and Janet Cochran.
