704 Coy, Labour Corps. Proelicas Ave on Death Telegrams
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 11:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi. Can anyone tell me the exact meaning of the code names Proelicas  and Proelicas Ave added at the end of post office telegrams to the relatives of soldiers who died during WW1.
My research tells me Proelicas means "Battle Casualty" but I have no idea what "Ave" stands for.
I have found two soldiers from the 704 Coy that died in 1918 one from abdominal injuries and buried at Grevillers British Cemetery on the 4th of January. The second died on the 5th of November and was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery. His has The Ave at the end of his telegram.
To me it means the 704 Coy were on the Somme near Bapaume in early January 1918 either working alongside or armed and in the fight. Also that they were fighting or working on a battlefield in Northern France during November 1918.
Please advise me if you can.

Apparently  Proelicas Ave  is one of the telegraphic addresses relating to the War Office or the Admiralty.

A burial at Etaples usually indicates the man died in one of the many hospitals in the area so his unit could well have been anywhere including Belgium.  If the man was JR Edwards of 704 Coy (who died 15 Nov 1918) his Effects entry says "died" which again usually indicates a death in hospital.

F Stringer (to whom the telegram refers) also died at Etaples from broncho something or another so I would be wary about locating their company from where these two died.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Proelicas was a telegraphic address for the office dealing with casualty reports.

F Stringer (to whom the telegram refers) died at Etaples from bronchopneumonia so I would be wary about locating their company from where he died.  The information originated from the OC of No 4 General Hospital Comies (Etaples)

Thanks for responses. Yes MaxD to Frederick Stringer, I think he was taken from the battlefield and sent to one of the hospitals at Etaples where he died. Charles Morrell who's telegram is attached was buried at Grevillers Cemetery near Bapaume so I think he was killed close by.
Thanks for all the links everyone, I now think that Proelicas meant Battle Casualty and Ave was a way of saying bless them.
