Where does Caroline Gerring fit in?
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 16:53 GMT (UK) »
Today* I received the marriage certificate for

Thomas Alder, full age, batchelor,
and
Honner Simpson, full age, widow
on
15 March* 1847 at Hatford Parish Church, Berks.

The certificate says that the bride's father was Thomas Simpson, but that's a clerical error and should read Thomas Gerring.

Thomas and Honner/Honor had a number of children, including my g.grandmother, Caroline Gerring Alder (b Hatford 1852) and I see that one of the witnesses at Thomas/Honor's marriage was a Caroline Gerring, and I wondered if anyone could help me identify who this Caroline was.  I think Honor's mother was Elizabeth Goddard, so I wondered if Caroline was maybe Honor's sister/sister-in-law?

Can anyone help, please?
Thanks
STG

Edited to say : On all census records, Honor's place of birth in abt 1812 was Shellingford.
Edited again to say : My knowledge of Berkshire geography is very limited, but I now think that Shellingford should be Shillingford.

* nice coincidence with the date - it being 15 March today!

Thanks Rosie.

I had seen the transcription of Honor's marriage to Henry Simpson (on FindMyPast) in 1833, but don't recognise the names of either of the witnesses (John Drewett and Charles Varley).

Tried to follow up on the 1829 born Caroline Gerring, and found one in 1851 as a servant, but then confused myself again by finding a widowed Caroline Gerring b 1829 in Faringdon in 1901 with some of her children.  Just how many Caroline Gerrings were there?  ::)

Hi STG,

In looking in the Shellingford transcripts the marriage is between Henry Stimpson., bach, Hatford and Honor Gerring, sp. By Banns with no other details,   whereas the marriage records produced by the Berks FHS  confirm the same name (Stimpson)  with the addition of "consent of parents".
This to me would suggest that Honor was under age.

There is also a bapt. for Honor Gerring 13-12-1812 d/o Thomas & Betty (Index says Honor, transcript says [Hoave sic] also bur. Thomas Guerring 31-7-1854 aged 83

Oooh, so it is Shellingford after all!

Honor is obviously a difficult name to transcribe.  On the 1841 census, she's a he, and Ancestry has transcribed the name as Homer - so I could say I'm descended from Homer Simpson!  Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd write!  :D

Don't want you to think I'm at all cavalier about facts, but as I'm not descended from Henry, I'm not overly concerned whether he was Simpson or Stimpson.  On Honor's marriage certificate in 1847, it's clearly written as Simpson, and he's on the Berkshire Burial Index and GRO Death indexes as Simpson.

In the 1833 marriage, I'd seen the "with consent of parents" and as Henry Simpson seems to have been born about 1805, thought it must be Honor, who was then, probably, just a few months short of her 21st birthday.

Many thanks for all your help.
STG

The last four entries record that Thomas is a carpenter.
Marriage at Shellingford 9 April 1860

Caroline's surname appears in the civil marriage index as Guerring.

(unfortunately the transcript does not give fathers' details)

William and Caroline Little are in Kempsford, Gloucestershire (where William was born) in 1861. Caroline is aged 42 and was born in Shellingford.
