Calderdale burials - Jonathan Collinge 1966
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 17:15 GMT (UK) »
If anyone can help with this one there'll be a million thanks coming your way - we've been through all the records I can find online, the national cemetery register and quite a few graveyards, all to no avail.

My great grandfather Jonathan Collinge was killed in a car crash in Todmorden on 17 Sep 1966. Because of the nature of his death, there was a coroner's inquest so the burial may have taken place somewhat later.

My mother (his granddaughter) went to the funeral and remembers it being on a hill high up, which led us to look in the first instance at Cross Stone but he's not on the registers there and when I had a cold, damp and rather unpleasant trudge round the graves there I couldn't see him.

Being sixteen at the time, she doesn't remember many details so she doesn't know how much to trust her memory.

Being right on the border with Lancashire doesn't help either as he could have been buried on the other side, and indeed his son (my grandfather) - his only offspring still in the country - lived in Manchester.

Like I say, we've been looking and looking. Any help would be massively appreciated!  :)

Which other graveyards have you eliminated?
If you list them, we can suggest other hilltop ones to start on...

Oh yes! :D Probably not as thoroughly as I would have liked as we were under time pressure, but it's something I'll go back to.

The only other I've had a proper scan of was Heptonstall.

Do you know where any other family members were buried, such as his wife or parents? That might be a good place to look.

If you can supply their names, a few extra pairs of eyes here might be able to find them.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

That's a very good question. I hadn't thought of that. His grandparents are in Hepstonstall and he was baptised there which is what pointed me in that direction. To be honest, I haven't actually requested the registers for that church, just searched the graveyard. His wife left for America in the 1920s taking the children with him.

The Hebden Bridge Local History Society (http://www.hebdenbridgehistory.org.uk/) have transcribed some of the memorials at Heptonstall, and the May 2013 listing (the most recent?) includes some of the people you mention, though not Jonathan. You can find the list under Activities in the site menu, at
http://www.hebdenbridgehistory.org.uk/gravestones/index.html

From the national probate indexes it looked to me as though at least two of Jonathan's siblings were living in Heptonstall when they died, so with a strong family connection it seems logical to look there for his burial. As far as I could tell from the West Yorkshire Archives catalogue, the burial registers for 1966 are still at the church.

Hi

This is not my main area but going by the dates I would have a look at Elland mainly the Exley Cemetery or Crematorium.
