Records of the Calderdale municipal cemeteries and crematoria are at Deceased Online (https://www.deceasedonline.com) - click on Coverage for details.

I can't see Jonathan listed there.

The mystery continues.

I'm quite badly phone phobic so I'd avoided actually ringing up the church at Hepstonstall, but I did and they couldn't have been nicer.

Sadly, still no sign of what happened to him after he died.

I think I just need to be methodical and create and execute a search plan. Part of my motivation is that he was much maligned during his life as he had drinking and gambling issues, but my mother's memory is of a very caring man. He saw horrors during WWI and that may have been the trigger for his issues. Mum wants to make sure he has a suitable memorial but at the minute it's like he's vanished into air.

Just re-reading this topic, I've realised that you haven't actually told us where he was living at the time of his death, only that he died as as result of a crash in Todmorden.

Having eliminated Heptonstall, where there were family connections, the place he was living would be the next most likely one to investigate. It should be given on his death certificate.

Thanks Arthur, good point.

He was living at Scaitcliffe Hall in Todmorden which was a retirement home at the time. The accident was just outside there.

I've emailed Mount Zion Baptist. It fits with the "on top of a hill" thing AND it's not far from where he spent most of his life (The New Delight Inn). Fingers crossed...

Hi

If he died as a pauper he would have had a basic funeral which would have been at the nearest crematorium, local cemetery or in a family plot if they had one. I would also look in the local papers for an obituary that sometimes gave the funeral details.

A longshot, if the home is still in existence you could write to them to see if they have any records?

You can search the burial records - no sign of a Collinge in 1966.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Wow! If only all churches did that! I'm looking at Mount Zion in Slack rather than that one, although Mum looked at it on Google Streetview yesterday and it didn't ring any bells for her.
