Joseph McGaffin Grave
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 19:34 GMT (UK) »
I have a Joseph McGaffin who was born on 14th August 1847 to James McGaffin and Matilda McGaffin in Newry and died 16th June 1893 in Sheeptown. He married a Jane Bradford on 20th August 1879 in Newry (Methodist Church). I was wondering would there be a certain cemetery he would be buried in. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Place of burial often depends on religion. Was he also Methodist? if so, does the local Methodist church (or church he attended) have burial ground?

Sheeptown is on the outskirts of Newry. There's a Monks Hill Municipal Cemetery in Newry but I'm not sure when it opened.

On the 1901 and 1911 (surname misspelt as McGuffin in 1911) Irish Census records Jane McGaffin and her children are Presbyterian

Have a look at this graveyard map for ideas of local church graveyards (you can filter by denomination)-

Thank you for this, I do believe he was Presbyterian his brothers were too. There are so many but I would look in the Old Meetinghouse Green because it is on Church Street and Joseph’s father had a house on Church Street. It might not have any relevance to what I’m looking for but it’s a place to start.

If they lived on Church Street and were Presbyterians it would be worth checking St. Patrick's Church of Ireland-
