COCKS family - THE ISLAND, NEWQUAY
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 23:26 GMT (UK) »
Chatting with my mum, she remembers my Great Granny & her cousin, Lena, travelling by train to Newquay once a year to visit cousins who lived on The Island at Newquay. Previously we were unsure of their surname & had been searching for the wrong one - but I had a breakthrough this week - we discovered they were called William Morley COCKS (known as Morley) & Annie (nee Berryman). Annie was a first cousin to my Great Granny. Mum thinks that their son was called Edgar , & in turn his wife was called 'Carrie' - I found a marriage for John Edgar Roy COCKS & & Catherine A McCallum in 1954. I think that Morley & Annie may also have had a son called Peter COCKS.

If there is anyone out there whocan help me find out anything about this family, I would be fascinated to hear from you.

Many thanks.

The only marriage I can find is between a William  Morley Cocks and Annie Hocking
Dec 1906 Truro 5c 293

William was born 17 August 1885 to Henry Cock/Cocks and Susan Sampson who married in 1882 and he died in St Austell in 1960

Annie was born 16 August 1884 to Thomas Hocking and Mary Jane Berryman who married in 1877

William and his family are on the 1901 Census RG13/2218/F31/p1
Annie and her family are on the 1901 Census RG13/2218/F97/p6

Hope this helps,

Some information here ;
 http://www.newquayvoice.co.uk/news/6/article/2450/

From the above link;
Quote
The next owner of the Island was a WM Cocks. Together with his wife they had run the Min-Y-Don, a hotel in Island Crescent.

Their son Peter Cocks, a well-known solicitor and councillor took over the ownership of the Island.

He was the youngest chairman of the old Newquay Urban District Council.

Peter’s mother remarried to artist Norman Hall after her husband passed away.

Hello there
My mother Gillian cocks was the daughter of Edgar cocks.
My mother remembered going to see her grandparents who owned the island.
My mother has recently passed away but her brother Morley is still alive and lives in Cornwall still
