Mary MARTIN (Nee Richards) c. 1804
« on: Friday 16 March 18 14:13 GMT (UK) »
PLEASE can you help me.

I received my DNA results this week and have been contacted by a lovely lady in U.S. with "a match".  We have been desperately trying to find out, exactly where our DNA "connects".  Her thoughts are that is with MARY MARTIN (nee RICHARDS), born c. 1804 in ? Chalfont, who I believe to be my great, great grandmother.

My question is, was Mary Martin (nee Richards) c.1804 born in Chalfont, Bucks....or Chalfont, Pennsylvania ?

My tree reads like this:

William MARTIN c. 1805 (or 1806/7) in Cowden, Kent.  His wife was Mary Richards c.1804 ? Chalfont

Daughter of William and Mary was my great grandmother, Lucy MARTIN b. 1833 Bognor, Sussex and died 1895.

Son of Lucy Martin 1833, was my grandfather John Alfred Martin b.1861 in Frindsbury, Strood, Kent. (His name was changed from Martin to Jones when he was ten years old)

This is SO confusing to me.....please can you help.

Welcome to rootschat

It is quite possible that you are not related and that Ancestry has just linked the two Chalfonts  ;)
Where do you have your family in 1841/51.

Just adding 1861 reference

Hello Rosie,

Heck, I would be so disappointed now that Ancestry have said we are a match, albeit a smaller match. But with your experience, you're possibly right.

I don't know how to work out where William and Mary were in 1841, as Martin is quite a common name and there seems to be a number of them when I look at the census.

I am only suggesting it may be wrong as I understand that if the places of birth are not entered correctly they can produce mis matches.

Have you managed to find a baptism for your Mary Richards in Buckinghamshire.  I see she married William in Sussex. - Good find for baptism Bucks boy, same parish as they married in  ;D

I would say it is Chalfont, Bucks can't post image as it is a look up board.

Have you seen the actual marriage entry for William Martin / Mary Richards.

I am wondering whether James Richards who is with them in 1841 is her son - was he illegitimate or was Mary married before
