169 Harton Lane, South Shields
« on: Friday 16 March 18 18:22 GMT (UK) »
hi All
Could anyone tell me what building was standing in 1952 at 169 Harton Lane South Shields, I know at one time it was a Workhouse and now it is South Tyneside District Hospital but what was there in the November 1952. My Grand Uncle John Arthur Pullan died here and this is one of two address's on his death certificate the other being his home address.

Hi CaroleW
Thank you very much for your quick answer, now i know he died in Hospital and not in the workhouse. I googled South Tyneside Hospital but nowhere could i find the date it stopped being a workhouse and became a Hospital.
Once again thank you very much.

From the page on South Shields Workhouse from www.workhouses.org.uk:
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/SouthShields/

After 1930, the workhouse became Harton Institution and General Hospital, then South Shields General Hospital in the late 1940s, and later South Tyneside District Hospital. Only a few of the original workhouse buildings now survive.

And, on the pages on Workhouse Addresses, for South Shields, it says:
1 Moor Lane, West Harton, Harton R.D.; later given as 169 Harton Lane, South Shields
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

If you Google the address one of the hits is the National Archives site.  Scroll down and you will see “Other Information” which is where it mentions 1937
