That's the birth record I have. My mum had told me that they arrived with 2 children and a baby. That's why I was looking.

Obviously not within living memory - family stories are often a bit right and a bit wrong.  :)

Birth
1887/   C9046
WILSON James Joss
Father James Joss   Mother Emma Barondingle

The birth was not at sea at the prefix would have been M = Marine birth—happened at sea and was then registered at the first port of call in Queensland

The C indicates the birth registration was outside Brisbane.

The online subscription databases do not have the same information as the Queensland BDM's website.

There is a facility to purchase an image of a certificate online at Qld BDM which is emailed.

If he was born at sea, in 1887, it should be in the ship's log.

If you can get hold of "Log of Logs" (it comes in 3 vols), with a bit of luck it should tell you where the log can be located.

But to me, the Birth record gives you the date as provided earlier, by Groom.

I can see how the story of "My mum had told me that they arrived with 2 children and a baby. That's why I was looking,"  as if he was born soon after they arrived that is how it would appear to everyone.

That must have been a very uncomfortable voyage for his mother.

Poor woman must have spent the last couple of weeks of the voyage with her knees clamped together, barely daring to move LOL
