Yes, I think it may be worth while looking at the James Jack from Milton, I have that Newspaper clipping saved. In the 1821 census is it possible James and his family were living in another part of Scotland ? Its so difficult to know for sure. I'm also confused as to why the daughter of James Jack is living in Ireland in her early 20's at the time of her marriage? whilst her Father is in Glasgow... ??? ???

Thanks again for your help.

Any clues from the names of witnesses to the marriage? Or from the names given to any children they had?

Perhaps she visited family in the area who were in need of help and stayed a while.

For reference, here's the newspaper announcement from Leslie Rankin's local newspaper in County Londonderry-
Coleraine Chronicle, 22 Sept.1849: Married- At Garvagh, county Derry, on the 8th inst., by the Rev, Mitchell Smyth, Mr. Leslie Rankin, builder, to Margaret, second daughter of James Jack, Esq., Glasgow.

Leslie and Margaret had one son, 'Mitchell Smyth Rankin', he would be my 3x great grandfather and was born around 1853. He was the only child these two had together. I'm assuming he was named after the COI minister for St. Pauls in Garvagh who was interestingly born in 1807 like Leslie Rankin.

The marriage certificate has a Robert Robertson and a John someone (can't decipher his last name) as the two witnesses. I'll see if I can find more about them.

Thanks
