Edward CHRISTIE gravesite or burial information please
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 06:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello, all,

I have not been here in a very long time and I am so happy to see many names that I recognise.

I recently received an email regarding a long-ago thread that I commented on, and now I have been drawn back down the rabbithole.

I have tried to find the gravesite or other burial information for Edward CHRISTIE. I have his date of death as 30 Aug 1880 in either Franklin or Hobart, registration number 231. I have browsed around the Tasmanian resources and tried to search cemetery records, but am at a bit of loss. I believe that he was Catholic, although he was married in the Church of Scotland in Hobart. His wife's name was Mary, formerly WEBB, if that is any help.

I'm to do the search myself if someone can redirect me along the right track.

Many thanks.

The death was registered in the district of Franklin, so he was most likely buried there.

Original registry here
http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD90-1-1

Graves of Tasmania, Southern, Huon here (not complete)
http://www.gravesoftas.com.au/municipalities/Southern_Tasmania.htm

Can check offline church records if you don't have luck

M :)

Thank you so much, matthewj64.

Following your link, I checked all cemeteries of Huon, Port Cygnet (as this is where his widow lived when she died), Hobart, Tasman, and the Cornelian Bay site, all to no avail.

Are you able to check offline records for me, please, or direct me as to how I can do that myself? I have checked Trove to see if there was a death or funeral notice, again without luck.

With many thanks.

Yes, will do - there's a couple of burial registers for Franklin on microfilm that I can look at.

Did they live at Franklin or another town/area?

M

Thanks so much, M.

In 1861 Edward was in Hobart, as I have information that he was discharged there from the British Army. He also gained a hawker's licence in Hobart, also in 1861.

The last of his eight children (William) was born, or at least registered, in Franklin in 1876.

His wife, Mary CHRISTIE (nee WEBB), was listed as a fruit grower of Lymington in the Tasmanian PO directory 1892-3. I realise that this is a lot later, but perhaps might indicate where they had land together before Edward's death?

Hi,

Hobart Town Gazette 22nd June 1880 on page 669 has a notice relating to CROWN LANDS FOR RENTAL BY PUBLIC AUCTION and Lot 651 was up for rent in the Parish of Leithbridge, County of Kent fronting Dickenson's Creek, bounded by Lots purchased by W. Jones, Edward CHRISTIE and Crown land.

Thank you, Gerry.

I am out of practice with Trove and, while I saw the listing for that, I couldn't find it on the page. I struggle sometimes to move around in Trove.

That makes sense. Lower part of Tasmania, near the Huon.

Many thanks.

There are birth records for 1871 and 1876 showing Edward as farmer, Upper Huon, now known as Glen Huon. Dickenson's Creek as found by Aussie1947 is not far from Glen Huon.

1884 ad describing the property (top of page, second last column)
"...has received instructions from Mrs Christie, who is leaving the district...her snug property at the Upper Huon"
1884 'Advertising', The Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954), 31 July, p. 4. , viewed 18 Mar 2018, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article9091107

add - the description would make more sense geographically if it said 5 miles from the main rd and half a mile from the Huon river, so I'm fairly sure the ad has an error

His death cert shows registration in Franklin. The informant was Eliza Webb, his sister-in-law, of Hobart Town.

He was a farmer, aged 60 and died of asthma.
