Bridget McGorry born about 1820
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 14:43 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a Bridget McGorry/McGoury (could be slightly different spelling). She was born about 1820, possibly in Londonderry. This is only a guess based on where she lived later on and where some of her children were born. She married Farrell Cleary, but I am not sure when or where. They had a son, born James Cleary in Corrick, Draperstown in 1848 and Catherine in 1864. There may be other children. I would love to find out where she was born and who her parents were.

Tithes Applotment Books
1823-1837 Tithes Applotment Books
based upon the index work of the Irish Genealogy Hub’s
listing for each parish in Northern Ireland,
which are quicker to lookup if you know the parish!

The relevant original books are in the
Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Belfast
searching just for Ballynascreen civil parish
Cleary, John Townland: Cavanreagh Year: 1825
Cleary, Lawrence Townland: Cavanreagh Year: 1825
Cleary, Ned Townland: Corick Year: 1825
Cleary, Shane Townland: Cavanreagh Year: 1825
didn’t find McGorry/McGoury
my guess suggests Farrell’s father could be Ned, or Peter Sr below,
also using an incomplete index to hubs index to the parish index produces

Following on useing the surviving fragments for the 1831 census show I have rearranged order slightly
Residents of a house 19 in Corick (Ballynascreen, Loughinshollin, Londonderry)
Number of house –Forename- Surname-   Number of families in each   -Number of males in family   Number of females in family-   Number of male servants-   Number of female servants-   Number in Established Church-   Number of Roman Catholics-    Number of Presbyterians   -Number of other Protestants
                     Male Female
No 19 Eneas Cleary      1   4   5   -   -   -   9   -   -

there are two McGowan families in the same census nearby i was looking fo McG*
Residents of houses 11 and 12 in Moneyguiggy (Ballynascreen, Loughinshollin, Londonderry)
No 11 Saml McGowan   1   1   3   2   1   -   3   4   -
No 12 Jas McGowan      1   2   4   3   1   -   4   6   -
if either Samuel or James had a daughter named Bridget McGowan that might identify her in this context and as a mixed marriage record it might make it difficult to find the record
I didn’t check each sub division of Ballynascreen or Loughinshollin

from above Eneas Cleary might well be the father of  Peter and Farrell and even grandfather see the Emas note by  Heywood in previous reply
1847 we are in famine times
good luck onwards

Thank you guys for your help! Just to clarify, you think this Eneas Cleary is Farrell's father? And Farrell has a brother called Peter? Isn't that Eneas that died Farrell's son though? And Bridget's baptism/birth/parents cannot be found?

Looking at the name suggestions, I think ‘Emas’ could well be Eneas. I was thinking more birth and death of the same child but maybe not - maybe the death is an older Eneas.

‘And Bridget's baptism/birth/parents cannot be found?’
have you checked the marriage records around Draperstown area in the PRONI list I gave you. One of my experiences is if a mixed marriage didn’t take place in a catholic church, it sometimes took place in a Church of Ireland church rather than a Presbyterian church.
Slow up please,  Rome wasn’t built in a day, you know more than us and are not offering us enough for the leap back to Ireland, for us to be sure you factually know everything overseas at the nearest point of arrival after her emigration.
Did she emigrate?
what lead/led you to guess Bridget was born about 1820?

do I discount the following as a wrong family?
is it possible that the next door neighbor or family sharing accomodation in Kingston, Mc Goir could be McGorry etc
ie Bridget emigrated with neighbours. have you checked out family search.org s  FAMINE emigration records

Hi SuperFuzz,
The Irish parish records can be quite confusing at times. I suppose the priests didn’t think we would want to read them decades later so sometimes the writing or order isn’t the best. ;)

The US census record posted looks tempting but the children were still being born in Draperstown so won’t be them.

I found more

Anne Clery 6th May 1860 parents Farrel Clery and Biddy McGorry, Carrick/Corick
Sponsors Henry Mellon and ? McGorry

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632987#page/117/mode/1up

You say you have Catherine 1864 - her sponsors were Nicholas and Ann McKeown - as John’s. That is two McKeown couples - perhaps they are connected.

Thanks so much for your help and research, I really do appreciate it. I got this info about Bridget from someone on Ancestry who I spoke to, so I suppose her birth date could be different. Thank you for all you have found.
