Margaret Jones
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 20:00 GMT (UK) »
I just wondered if anyone had any information on my gt grandmother Margaret Jones who married my gt grandfather George Rickards. Apparently she was born in Marshfield nr Castleton in Monmouthshire but I can't seem to find any records of her birth. It is possible that she was born Mary Margaret Jones but known as Margaret. She had a brother John Jones. George was previously married to Amy Potter who died in 1850 and he probably married Margaret between 1851 and 1853. I would be grateful if anyone has any information.

There's a John Jones of Castletown  b c1845 on 1851 with parents Evan and Mary. Evan is a baptist minister, which seems to go with George Rickards who appears to be a pillar of the local sunday school.

Evan not at home in 1841 - no Margaret with them in either census

Might be worth getting the marriage cert to check- it's a civil marriage as far as I can see.

Thank you everyone for your help. Yes George was involved with the Baptist Church. If I remember correctly on the record of his marriage to Amy her father was a Baptist Minister. I have seen the record of Mary Margaret Jones birth and I did wonder if my gt grandmother could have used her second name because George's daughter by his first wife was named Mary. In the 1851 census for Castleton George is living with his two children Mary and Henry and his mother Mary Evan is living with them I think as housekeeper. Does anyone know the date of the census in 1851?

The baptist minister and poet Evan Jones of Castleton is listed in the
Dictionary of Welsh Biography
(http://yba.llgc.org.uk/en/s-JONE-EVA-1793.html) which mentions his
marriage to Mary Morgan, Maesyfelin, St. Lythan GLA in November 1824,
and with whom he had 12 children, 9 of whom survived.

His will can be seen at the NLW web site:
LL/1856/156 Evan Jones, Baptist minister, Marshfield, MON.
