If you had googled "william girvan poots" lots of hints/information on him in Australia would have come up. It may, however, be more difficult to find recent details of children (if any) due to restrictions on recent records.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Could just be a coincidence, but there was a chap living in Herbert, Queensand in the 1960s, according to electoral rolls, and elsewhere in Queensland in later years, who had first name which was same as your William's middle name and surname Poots.

William Girvan Poots of Belfast also appeared, at times, in the Electoral Rolls for Herbert.

Yes Queensland death certificates contain details of marriages and names and ages of children (and whether they are living).

There is another possible son - same surname in the same district in electoral rolls.   I will pm the name so you can locate them on whitepages https://www.whitepages.com.au/
and possibly send them a letter.

William had five children. He was my grandfather. A beautiful, kind, gentle, fun-loving man. Never lost his Irish accent.
