John STANSFIELD
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 23:35 GMT (UK) »
John STANSFIELD  born about 1780/90- our family history and story goes that this person was on HELGOLAND in 1811-12 as an Adjudant des Gouverneurs and got together with a local ( Anna Hansen) and they had a daughter Anna Margaretha STANSFIELD born on Helgoland 1812 and then there is no further record of John. I cant locate and marriage for John and Anna in Helgoland records, no place of birth or death for John. One of the family enigmas. Does anyone else have a similar family story involving Helgoland out there in genealogy land. Would be so grateful to get some more information on this one. Thank you in anticipation.

There are lots of John Stansfield baptisms on FamilySearch, between those dates!
Without any further clues (Father's name? Mother's name?) it will be difficult to pin one down. :(

Baptisms in Lancashire, Hackney, Holborn, Leeds, Yorkshire, Rochdale, Derbyshire, Gravesend, Manchester, Ashton Under Lyne, etc.

P.S. you made a spelling mistake, missing an "i"? It's Heligoland ;D

I was puzzled by the french title Adjudant des Gouverneurs. It was not a french speaking island.

However the governor in 1812 was Corbet James d'Auvergne, a Royal Navy officer who was born in Jersey and had french relatives,

I'll see if there was a Royal Navy officer by the name of John Stansfield
