Which Victorian marriage record to get?
« on: Sunday 18 March 18 00:43 GMT (UK) »
Searching the Vic BDMs for a marriage for Martha Nelson in 1848, I was surprised to see two records:

NELSON Martha Marriage SUTTON John 1848 21A
NELSON Martha Marriage SUTTON John 1848 3538

Which one should I get?
England:
Durham: COULSON, FENWICK, HUNTER, LOWES, NAYLOR, ROBSON
Norfolk: DEWING, OUGHTON, TAYLOR,
Lancashire: TWEDDLE
Ireland: KEATING, KIRBY, Limerick; NELSON, Donegal
Scotland: BENNIE, Glasgow; COOK, Renfrewshire; HENDERSON, Alloa/Dundee; HUNTER, Glasgow; KIRKWOOD, Alloa; LAMONT, Dalkeith; YOUNG, Glasgow
Switzerland: VOSTI, DELUBINI

I think I've worked out that the record with reg no 21A would be the church record. Would this have the names of the witnesses?

Hi,
1848 was pre-separation from NSW so the 21A record probably was a NSW church record.

I have a NSW Church Marriage record for 1848 at Yass and it has a two lines for "In the presence of" and where from.

The marriage was in Melbourne, Victoria.  Possibly this parish record has been filmed twice.  My CD showing all the early Church Records for Vic with original images from BDM won't load.  Bit cross as it was only published 6 years ago.

NELSON Martha
SUTTON John
1848 Reg#21A   Denomination Methodist/Wesleyan   Parish Melbourne  Fiche#2

NELSON Martha
SUTTON John
1848  Reg#3538  Denomination Methodist/Wesleyan  Parish Melbourne  Fiche#882

I have a number of these parish records from Vic BDM with scant information.  No witnesses. Civil registration didn't comment until Jul 1853.

Thanks for the clarification, Cando. Would these fiche be available in the National Library? I have an 1851 marriage with witnesses so I'm hoping that one of the witnesses for this marriage was Martha's sister, so I know I have the right Martha Nelson.

Sorry I have no idea.  Have you searched their catalogue.  As I mentioned previously I have these on a CD which won't open and includes images.

Bear in mind that the 1851 marriage may also be a parish record with scant information and no witnesses.

Thanks Cando, I did check the NLA catalogue without success, but that reminded me I hadn't checked the SLV. They do have the CD and I've sent an "Ask a Librarian" request.

I've just received the certificate from the SLV Ask a Librarian. It's almost illegible - I'll post a copy on the handwriting forum to see if anyone can make sense of the witnesses' names.
