Someone has an ancestry tree (a McCartney) that says Marion passed away in California - (Unfortunately no source) 

California Deaths index has Marian B Macartney, born 1 March 1879, died 29 December 1974, San Mateo, California.

That must be the one whose visit to Keith was mentioned to me in about 1984 - my informant remembered the visit 'a number of years ago' but couldn't be more precise.

I wonder what happened to Charles Elmer Rosefelt and why Marion listed herself as single in the 1930 and 1940 censuses?

I added more details for Charles on reply 5 - he was 51 years old so perhaps he passed away.  I didn't find any record earlier.

Yes, I noted that, thank you. Also that it was his second marriage. I have saved the images of his index card and Marion's. But I can't find him in any census at all, before or after.

The curious thing is that in both 1930 and 1940, when you'd expect her to call herself Marion Rosefelt, widow, she is calling herself Marion Macartney, single.

Yes, that's it. Given the myriad variants that do present themselves when I search for McCartney, it is rather surprising that Macartney doesn't come up as a result, because it would have exactly the same Soundex value. I can just about understand why McCarterney wouldn't appear

Re Marion's husband, I think the name is Rosenfelt, not Rosefelt. He is in the 1920 census in Jersey City with two adult children Lucille and Charles.
