Camerons in strontian
« on: Sunday 18 March 18 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Please could someone kindly help me in my search? I have an ancestor called John Cameron, who in the 1841 census, writes that he was born in Strontian Argyll in 1828. His father was also John Cameron and his mother Kett.
Is Kett a family name for Katherine? His father was a leadminer. There is an unreadable(to me!)address given as Glasbhil. Is there a place called that? Could that be Glash-something? There are brothers Ewen, Donald, and Alex, and sisters Ann and Mary showing on the census. Is there anyway of finding the maiden name of Kett using her children's births?

So many questions, sorry! Any help would be gratefully received. Many thanks, Islay

Kett/Ketty/Kettrin/Katherine - given name.

To search SP type Cameron in the surname then down at the bottom father John mother Ket

It will bring up all the "recorded" baptisms.

http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400146 top left under where it says Inverness is where you want to look.

Or  you can look up marriage or death  records for the family to get the parents names ...
Do you not have a death record for your ancestor John Cameron ?

Thank you both for such prompt replies.

I have no certificates, birth, marriage or death for any of these people. There is no death certificate for John Cameron as he and his family disappear off then face of the earth as far as I can see! I cannot trace him, his wife or children after the 1881 census where they are in Ayrshire and he is an iron miner there. Indeed, I would love to know where they went! However, assuming they emigrated,(?) and that is why I have no death details, I am so keen to know at least the start of their story.

Could the Glasbhil be a misreading of an address or is it a place name? I will look at the map Don has suggested with great interest. Wow! I have just done so. I see lead mines very near Strontian. Would Strontian have been a village?

Thank you both, best wishes, Islay

Yes Strontian was a village and associated with the mines.  Google will give you the history.

There is a possibility this could be the death record of daughter Agnes Cameron although the birth
Is out by a year

Agnes George age 62 died 11 May 1926 Sharon Mercer Pennsylvania
Birth date 28 January 1864 Scotland
Father John Cameron
Mother Agnes Cameron
Spouse Thomas George

Might be worth checking out www.familysearch.org or Ancestry
