Missing mother...Fitzpatrick?
« on: Monday 19 March 18 14:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello!
I am trying to trace my great, great grandma, but I have very little to go on. In total, my mum and I have been looking for 27 years without any luck!

My great, great grandad was Joseph Fitzpatrick (b:1860 Leeds to Mary McEvoy and Thomas Fitzpatrick). Joseph apparently had a wife called Annie, but I can't confirm any further details. According to family tales, she died in childbirth. The couple apparently had 3 children, but I don't have any births recorded for them and I have searched England and Ireland. My rough guess is Thomas Fitzpatrick b:1889, Hugh Fitzpatrick (my great-grandad, b:1892) and Annie Fitzpatrick (b:1895). Annie was brought up by a Winifred McGuire (nee Gallagher) in Huddersfield, which is where she married and died. Thomas married a Mary E Hagan in Huddersfield and Hugh married Lizzie Rockett, also in Huddersfield. Both brothers served in WW1.

I am missing Joseph Fitzpatrick for the 1891 and 1901 census entries. I have him and his two sons in a lodging house in Huddersfield in the 1911 census, where he states that he's married and has been for 27 years. I can't confirm this.

To complicate matters a little more, Joseph was a hawker and so was Winifred and her family. I do have criminal records for Joseph Fitzpatrick for Halifax, Dewsbury, Wakefield, so I know he was 'around'

Any help or pointers as to where to go next would be greatly appreciated :)
Thank you!

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

The GRO Index Search, which now includes Mother's maiden names for births 1837-1916, has this:

GRO Reference: 1891  S Quarter in LIVERPOOL  Volume 08B  Page 124

and:
FITZPATRICK, HUGH        QUINN
GRO Reference: 1888  J Quarter in COCKERMOUTH  Volume 10B  Page 569
FITZPATRICK, HUGH        CLANCY
GRO Reference: 1888  D Quarter in BLACKBURN  Volume 08E  Page 428
FITZPATRICK, HUGH        HARDY

GRO Reference: 1897  D Quarter in LIVERPOOL  Volume 08B  Page 101

These are the only Hugh Fitzpatrick births in England/Wales in a 10 year span.
Of course, if he was illegitimate, then he may have been registered under his mother's maiden name?

The death of Annie fits - it was the quarter after Thomas' birth?
So any further children may have a different mother?

Thank you for all your replies. It was a lovely surprise when I logged on this morning!
I had wondered about the Annie Fletcher, but it was not being able to link all three births that put me off. However, I agree that perhaps there was a different mother. I had assumed that Annie (child, b:1895?) was the last child born and was called Annie because her mother (also Annie) died giving birth to her.

I'll follow up the leads you've kindly provided. Thanks again  :D

Hello!

I have Annie (daughter of Joseph Fitzpatrick) on the 1901 census as Annie Maguire, 'daughter' of Winifred Maguire, aged 8 born 1893 in Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire, England (archive number RG13, Piece number 4242, Folio 72, Page 29) living with Winifred, Philip and Hugh (Winifred's birth sons) and George her brother (but I can't be sure of that) in a caravan in Kirkstall, Road Burley, Leeds. I did wonder whether the Hugh was actually Hugh Fitzpatrick, but there is a birth for a Hugh Maguire in Dewsbury in 1891 and I think he dies in Pontefract in 1908. Hugh Fitzpatrick (my great granddad) died in Huddersfield in 1925.

I can't find Annie in the 1911 census, but I believe that she was in Huddersfield.

She marries John Hizzard in Huddersfield in 1916 as "Annie Fitzpatrick". Winifred Maguire lived with Annie and John in Huddersfield until her death in 1929.

She dies in Huddersfield on the 17.02.1979 as "Annie Hizzard".
