Passenger lists UK to Canada 1871-73
« on: Monday 19 March 18 15:12 GMT (UK) »
I have - thanks to DNA - a newly discovered gt grandfather and am trying to find out what happened to him after 1871

He is Thomas Aldridge and he is on the 1871 census with his family in Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, UK. The household:-

James Aldridge Head 38 cordwainer (shoemaker)
Maria      "        Wife 38
Thomas Aldridge son 18 cordwainer
George           "       son 15      "
William            "       son 11      "
Frederick         "       son 8
Mary A            "       dau  7
Martha J          "       dau  5

I have found most of the family (minus Thomas and George) on the 1881 census in Hamilton, Ontario with the addition of daughter Alice aged 8 who was born in Ontario. So, the family must have emigrated some time between 1871 and 1873.

I have not yet found either George or Thomas on 1881 censuses in either the UK or Canada so I'd very much like to find the passenger list for when the rest of the family emigrated to see if Thomas - or George - is with them.

Can anyone please help?

Jill

Wow!  I hardly blinked!! ;D

That's fantastic, Sandra and Christine. It fits completely, with the added bonus that he moved into New York which might fit with my DNA match.

I am very grateful.

Their son , George James , was born 25 Sept 1875 in Wentworth and another son , Frederick Charles 5 Mar 1878 , also in Wentworth.  I can find them on the 1892 census in New York , but not in Canada or US in 1881/80 so far.

Thanks - I'm fitting everything together here!!  Feel as though I've won the lottery!!;D

Something has just occurred - Lottie Eliza (age given as 27) marries Bert Philip Curtis in 1909 (definitely looks like the right girl) but on the 1910 census there's a Lottie E Aldridge living with her parents and siblings (age given as 32).

The ages could be out a bit but was this normal in the USA that a married woman would retain her meiden name - like they did in Scotland? Or do we assume she's left her husband and gone back to her maiden name?

Anyway, shan't bother too much about that - its just a detail. I have lots and lots of info to digest!!

Thanks again to you both.
