That's very interesting. Thanks!

I have uploaded my dna to Gedmatch. I'm still a novice at this, but it's starting to make a lot more sense now.

Why are you surprised by the high percentage?

England was settled by Angles, Saxons, Normans, Bretons, Dutch, Norwegians, Swedish and Danish in the last 1500 years. Mine is around 51% and I'm not surprised by that.

Some of the responses on here are a bit strange, most of the supposed inaccuracies can be explained readily once you understand how genetic clusters overlap.

On Gedmatch my top four are:

1   North_Dutch   4.29
2   Danish   5.52
3   West_German   5.84
4   Norwegian   5.8

Within the context of the history of England the above result is about right, especially in East Anglia, where I am from.

No problem Chalmers, you are an Anglo-Saxon with a smattering of Viking.

How far back are these "ethnicity estimates" supposed to go? Are we not all basically African?

If we start excusing the discrepancies between the estimates and known paper trails with references to migrations 1500 years ago, then why is there any distinction made between British/Western Europe/Scotland/Scandinavian etc in the first place? The demarcations are extremely unreliable and is the most misleading (if not deceitful) part of this DNA testing business. How can they legally get away with being so inaccurate?

In 50 years time, future genealogists will laugh at our gullibility and compare us to previous times when everyone wanted to find an ancestor in the Bible.

It actually makes more sense or seems more realistic having uploaded my Dna file to Gedmatch.

South West English, Orcadian and West Scottish can be traced in my family tree on quite recent times. North Dutch I'm not sure of, but it's very close to Yorkshire where I also have a lot of ancestry.

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Thank you for the link. I have had a good read and been playing around on Gedmatch and still don't have a clue what its all about sadly.
