London Sites for Family History
« on: Friday 23 March 18 22:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Have just found out that my sister will be visiting England next month. She is hoping to be able to fill in some blanks on our family that will require her to visit several locations and has no idea where to go or what she might need to do to gain access to documents.  She will be staying in central London and will only be there for a week.
Am hoping that one of you might be able to direct us to the right place and have identified the following interests and sites I saw on the internet.
Wills, Probate, Death Certificates, Voter Lists and other documents (the wills were probated in London, the deaths occurred there also and the residence is located in SE Dulwich )
1. Property ownership-1920 through 1975
    Land Registry, Telford
    Croyden
2. National Archives, Kew
Thought I had this figured out but after further reading of items located at the National Archives, I find that they do not have wills after 1858 nor do they have birth, marriage/death certificates so I am not sure where these might be housed. Not sure if this location would be worth the time for what we are seeking.
3. London Metropolitan Archives
   40 Northampton Road
   Clerkenwell

Specifically looking for:
Home ownership 1920 through 1975
Voter lists after 1970
Death certificate-1975
Probate of wills, 1956, 1962 and 1974

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It could be worth checking the subscription sites to see if any of the things you require are available online.

Depending on your sister's level of interest in family history and her research skills, sending her to various research centres is likely to be very time consuming and could be fruitless. It is a different matter if you have a specific lookup, and can provide her with exact dates, names, appropriate reference numbers etc IF those records are not available online. I believe some or most places require registration, and with some it is advisable to order documents in advance. Definitely do your homework first.

I'm sure she will has a million things on her to-do list if she is only in London for a week. She might curse you for sending her to do family history research.  :)

Ruskie, Mart 'n' Al, Dundee,

Thanks for your input, I figured it was a lot to undertake but she suggested it, so I was not going to be the one to tell her what I thought. We may be twins but our brains don't work the same way!

I'll check out the addresses of the Land Registry Offices, I had only identified one.
