Robert George Dunn Korean War 1947
« on: Saturday 24 March 18 13:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

i did not know where to post this so i'm hoping here is OK?

A relative of mine has passed away recently and she never got to know her father as he died at war. I have always wanted to try and find him and it's only now that we have found a few bits and pieces to help.

Robert George Dunn, born in Washington (not 100% certain on this)
He was a SGT based in Middlewich, Cheshire and was promoted Captain.
He was then in the Korean war and was shot in 1947.

During his time in Middlewich, I'm presuming it is then, that he met his partner Doris Walklate (1920 - 1983) they did not marry but they had there child (Joan) in 1944. Robert died when John was 3 years old so she did not know much about him at all. Its only recently that we have found a book that was sent to her when she was 11! so approx 8 years after he had died.. it was a book called "Britains Homage to 28000 American Dead" and underneath "In Memory of R.G.Dunn" and inside, "American Troops on the march in Southern England". Now i know this book was probably sent to Robert's next of kin when he had died and it took 8 years for it to then be passed on the Joan, i have no idea at the moment who Robert's next of kin is as it's not me who has the book and i can no longer ask Joan any questions as she died in January.

Could anyone PLEASE shed any kind of light on this situation? I've tried to find information with the bits i have but i am struggling!

THANK YOU x

The Korean War started in 1950 and ended in 1953
"Britains Homage to 28000 American Dead" was despatched to the families of those Americans killed whilst based in Britain.

Good afternoon,

Korea was a Japanese possession, when they surrendered the USSR moved into the north and the USA into the south. This was supposed to be a temporary situation but the USSR. wouldn't move out so stalemate existed.

That lasted until the North Koreans tried to reunify the country by force in 1950 which resulted in the Korean war.

But US troops had been present in South Korea since the end of WW2.

The poster specifies "The Korean War" and that he was killed in 1947. As I posted "Britains Homage to 28000 American Dead" was despatched to the families of those Americans killed whilst based in Britain.

Back again,

I appreciate that fact Stan but if he was killed in 1947 then it wasn't during the actual war but during the US occupation of South Korea.

PS, as he was shot I doubt it happened in the UK.

Stan

what is the "Britain homeage to 28000 american dead" book? i'm sorry that i'm so uneducated about something so important, i'm trying to learn more of what happened! but yes, he was based in Britain at the time but was apparently shot in Korea, i have no idea if he'd of been buried in Korea or Britain or Washington at the moment!

hello! why were the US troops in Korea since the WW2?

and if it was not the Korean War in 1947, do you know what it would have been? I had not realised that the years were so different! :O and no he definitely did not get shot in the UK.

thank you :)

"Britains Homage to 28000 American Dead" was despatched to the families of those Americans killed in the battle for Europe, so if it was sent in memory of R.G. Dunn, then he was killed in World War II. https://goo.gl/2otL3c
