George UNDERHILL, born 1835, Birmingham
« on: Saturday 24 March 18 14:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

George UNDERHILL was born on 21/09/1835, the son of Samuel and Ann UNDERHILL of Moor Street, Birmingham.   He had 5 siblings, Lavinia, Matilda, Samuel, Harriett and Henry.

He was released on licence from Parkhurst Prison on 26/02/1856 stating he was returning to Birmingham.   He did not re-offend.   I have not been able to trace him since.   Can anyone help please.

Thank you

Was father Samuel a brass founder?

Marriage of George Underhill to Harriett GRIFFITHS 29 Sep 1869 Birmingham St George.
His age is a little "off" ~1838.

Probate Calendar shows:
Name:   George Underhill
Death Date:   8 Dec 1917
Death Place:   Birmingham, West Midlands, England
Probate Date:   25 Jan 1918
Probate to Henry Fraser Brown and his wife Alice Matilda Brown.

Alice Matilda seems to have been the daughter of George's sister,Lavinia (who married George SABELL).

Sorry-this is a bit rushed. Just going out the door!

Hello Maureen,

Samuel UNDERHILL was a Brass Founder according to the 1841 England Census.

And...................George's elder sister, Lavinia UNDERHILL, certainly married George SABELL according to a Public Member Tree, that sadly only researches George UNDERHILL to age 6.

The ages for George UNDERHILL are confusing.   He was definitely born in September 1835 but looking at his convict records 1838 would seem more appropriate.   However, 1835 has to be accepted.   His Probate confirms he was a retired Furniture Dealer, with presumably no immediate family (wife, children etc.),  and to reconcile that with the 1871 entry as a Blacksmith with three daughters is slightly problematic.  Nevertheless these details should eventually provide a profile.

Thank you for the information.

He's on every census from 1871 to 1911 with his wife Harriet:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5Y1-518

She dies 15 Nov 1914-probate to George (retired furniture dealer) of 59 Priestley Rd Sparkbrook.
Same address as 1911 census.

Thanks Maureen,

You beat me by a slight head to the Census detail...........but it was certainly your "Probate" discovery that gave you the favourable odds.

Thank you once again 8)
