Getting concrete facts about William has been difficult I don't have a definitive DOB for him only an estimation from his military sign up papers ?/02/1881 I can't find a birth that fits 100% but I did find a birth that came close in Glasgow. I don't have a link to this but if it is acceptable i can attach docs to show this along with his sign up papers. Is this permitted on the forum?

Can you please post a link to this record you mentioned earlier-
... in the 1911 census I do however find William (if he is the same one) in Buttevant Barracks in Cork with the South Lancashire Regiment he is a regular who enlisted 1904, I've looked in Scotland and passenger list for emigration but no success.

Occupation flax dresser looks good and birthplace listed as County Down so why do you think he might have been born in Scotland?

Will do a bit more searching...

I have considered these and admit they are very close, but the William that I have doesn't have a middle name mentioned on any of the documents that I have. I'm surprised that the army didn't include a DOB on any of his records, I only looked at Scotland because I couldn't find him here and vaguely remember my Mum saying something about him being Scots. The William in Scotland is William James but his fathers name is wrong, William's fasther was also William. What I would give for a DOB.

Do his Army records not list a date of enlistment? with that it would be possible to use the age listed to narrow down his date of birth for further searches.
