FRANCIS, C/Katherine, South Australia
« on: Sunday 25 March 18 03:47 BST (UK) »
Peter and Catherine (snr) Francis arrived in Adelaide in 1866,  along with Michael their only surviving child, having lost two babes on the voyage to whooping cough.
I can find two births following their arrival, Elizabeth 1869 and Margaret 1871.
However, on the death certificate of Catherine Sr., (1898) there is mention of a daughter Katherine, age 31 (thus born ~ 1867) along with the other children.
Peter died in SA in 1873, so I'm thinking C/K must have been born there also.
After his death, Catherine (snr) moved with her children to Young, NSW.

Any suggestions as to where one would look further to find this birth?
Is it possible it did not get registered because it was so close to their arrival in Australia, or?

All comments welcome, and thanks for reading.

Nice to hear from you again Valerie  :)

So many births weren't registered in South Australia and for all sorts of reasons.  Perhaps it was registered at Strathalbyn/Macclesfied and the registration quarterly return did not arrive at the Adelaide Registry.

Who was the informant on her death certificate?

No mention of her chn in these In Memoriam notices placed by her brother and family.

Hi Cando

Many thanks for searching on my behalf.

I had found the births for the children of Catherine and Richard and the marriage and death for Catherine and Richard but you have provided me with other "goodies" I did not have.
The death notice indicates an age of  74 in 1943, so born in ~ 1869.  This is where I am not sure I have found the right person.  Perhaps she was not sure of her birth date, or wanted to appear younger for whatever reason. :(

My grandmother, Elizabeth Francis, was born in 1869 recorded at Strathalbyn. (She was not a twin) Her sister, Margaret, born and died 1871 was also recorded at Strathalbyn.

I am thinking that perhaps her death certificate would provide names of her parents, rather than the marriage certificate.

Once again, I appreciate your kind efforts on our behalf.
Valerie :)

Just a follow up..
from Trove

The Burrowa News (NSW : 1874 - 1951) Friday 18 September 1931 p 1 Article
OBITUARY
MR. MICHAEL FRANCIS
The death occurred last week of
a well-known district resident, in the
person of Mr. Michael Francis, of
Marengo, aged 70, after an illness of five weeks duration. Death took
place at the residence of Mrs. Harry James, in William Street, Young, a sister of the deceased. The late Mr. Francis was a native of County Clare, Ireland. He came to Australia at the age of six, and has lived at Marengo for 58 years. His wife and only son predeceased him. Mrs. K. Crowe, of Bexley, is another sister. The funeral took place to the Marengo  cemetery.

**Note 58 years would indicate that family moved to the area after Peter died in 1873.

Mrs Harry James was previously Elizabeth Francis, and Mrs. K. Crowe was previously C/Katherine Francis, her sister.

I am sure that the records Cando found for us are the one and same and will not further pursue a birthdate for her.

Thanks!!

Cando...thanks one more time!
I do have a photo of tombstone for Catherine Francis, but this one is much clearer.
Searched the website provided for many others of my tree, and found some treasures.
Several of the records for children of Richard Crowe and Catherine gave her maiden name as Francis...yeah!
Your help is much appreciated.
