Frederick LITTLEJOHNS born c1859, Geneva Switzerland
« on: Sunday 25 March 18 06:01 BST (UK) »
A branch of my tree have a son a British subject born in Geneva Switzerland abt 1859. It there any way of finding out more info as to what they were doing there as it seems to of been a short time.

The head of household was a theatre machinist, so it’s possibly to do with that, although I would expect him to not take the family if going for work. I wondered if perhaps his wife worked in the theatre but doubt she would of been acting while heavily pregnant.

I’d appreciate any help. Thanks.

The person is Frederick Littlejohns born c1859 Geneva Switzerland (British subject)
Parents Edwin Littlejohns (theatrical machinist) and Jane Littlejohns (nee Bennett).

I have all details on them prior to this and after, its just trying to work out why they were in Switzerland if I can.

Also a birth record for Frederick where would it be registered?

You could try a search of local newspapers. See post #6 in this thread for links provided by Svenja http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=749426.0

I have... And nothing obvious, but a good suggestion.

Have you searched the UK theatrical newspapers of the time to see any reports or adverts mentioning Switzerland?
Cross Europe travel for 'ordinary' folk at this date would be very unusual.  Maybe such an adventure might have been reported in UK.

Thank you everyone for your replies,

I looked at some of the websites mentioned, but couldn’t find anything, however the websites are very hard to navigate so not sure I am searching correctly.

I have looked at UK newspapers and while there are quite a few hits for the father Edwin and his career as a stage carpenter, as well a court case, and bankruptcy notes, there is nothing to mention the time in Geneva or why his pregnant wife would of been there.

It’s baffling. They can’t of been there long, as they have children born in London either side of Fredericks birth.
