This has been the thing that's thrown me too! Carlyle was married twice, first to a Mary Jane Lax then to Mary Susannah Hunter and there's just too many bloomin' Mary's!

I have a lady who married 3 times, each time her husband was called Robert! Maybe they had pillowcases with names embroidered so they looked for a new spouse who would match them :-)

to add to that, Ernest Hunter 1873 Q1 Gateshead MMN MOORE

I think the boys ages may have been transposed on the 1881 census?

Gateshead registrars index search show the subdistrict of Whickham which is right for him being born in Dunston

This could be correct however the marriage cert would be your best option.

JJ

Thanks so much! I'll order it tonight and wait on that coming - will let you know who is right :-)

In case you aren't aware, you can now order .pdfs of a birth entry in the original register, rather than an official cert via the GRO site search for the birth and then choose which option you want.
.pdf is £6 , cert is £9.25

If the certs confirm that the Joseph and Margaret on the 1881 census were 'your' Mary Susannah's parents, which is highly likely, then this may also be of interest.
I got nosey about the girl who was born c 1871 in the USA,  between the one born in Dunston and another born in Boosbeck.

That image shows a passenger list including Joseph, Margaret and the eldest girl Eleanor travelling fromLiverpool on the Wm F Storer, arriving in New York 19th May 1870

If you page back to image 19, that is where the header page for the ship is (though its not easy to read)
