Infant's Burial Ground
« on: Sunday 25 March 18 21:21 BST (UK) »
just doodling and came across an "Infant's Burial Ground"... Anybody else come across these?

I know children were sometimes buried outside walls of Cemeteries etc..this just has me curious as it is on what was consecrated ground.

Perhaps for children who died young? When my grandmother was looking for a burial plot she wanted to be buried next to her sister (who died around age 7) but was told only children could be buried in that section. My father's oldest brother was buried (in different cemetery) in a similar section but in both cases no markers were allowed.

An old unmarked burial plot in Inverness-shire was reserved for Catholics who hadn't been baptised, whatever their age. About 20 years ago a priest from Canada issued an apology & had a wee ceremony in the place, a remote spot ten miles from the churchyard!

Quite possible!

I've seen the various sections within g/yards, quite possible this it the "Infant's Section" of the Parish.

Just never come across a dedicated Cemetery for infants.

Could be a good few of these places, many now forgotten!

There is one marked on old maps near Rathlacken, Mayo but not consecrated ground so might not be the same. I think they were for unbaptised babies.

@ Hallmark, the Forestry were going to put the plough through that bit of hill when one of the old folk pointed out the burial ground, so now there's a wall of Sitka with a square bit left unplanted & a cairn built with a wee plaque. I used to know the name of it! "You'll be buried in @@@@ was used as an insult!

Possibly it became a children's burial ground only after the church was no longer used.  The map doesn't indicate how old the ruins are, but this article:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lt6/

mentions that some of the sites used for the burial of unbaptised infants  were the grounds of ruined medieval chuches.

Yes it would be for unbaptized babies, this one is on old Church grounds,  maybe deconsecrated? If it wasn't in old church grounds it wouldn't have me puzzled but maybe it is just the infants Section!

Will take a trip out in car......   ;D
