Census search 1871
« on: Monday 26 March 18 00:42 BST (UK) »
I can't find these people in the 1871 Greenock census.

Archibald McPherson and Christina McPherson, both born Argyllshire.  Both born around 1818.  In the 1861 census (Cross shore Street), they have children John Jessie and Christina.  I also searched for the children in 1871 (all born Greenock) but no luck

Archibald died in 1879 at 84 Drumfrochar Road; Christina died at Sugarhouse Lane 1872.  (Archibald's mother was found at Sugarhouse Lane in the 1871 census, but Christina's not at the same address.

I have people missing in 1871 also. I checked the original records knowing where they stayed as they were at the same address 1861 and 1881. A lot of the records are unreadable. That could explain it. Looked like they were filled out in pencil. There are Post office directories online if you do a Google. Not sure if you are local but all Census records are available on Microfiche in the Heritage Hub in Cathcart Street, Greenock.

Thanks Mark.  As I live in Australia and probably won't be back in Greenock in the near future, I'll have a look at whatever records are in the Watt Library on the internet.

Names/dates/occs for all known children may help?

If the census isn't available, closest I could find were these who may be children/relations?

Hi, there should be links to the Post Office directories on the Watt Library page. I spend a bit more time in the Heritage Hub in winter months. The next time I'm in I'll have a look for you although that may be a couple of months away. Regards Mark

Re the three names you sent me Annie.  The addresses all link.  John MacPherson, 64 Drumfrochar Road is probably his son.  Arch's mother's (Catherine McPhee) death was registered by Jessie Brown, grand-daughter of 62 Drumfrochar Road.  Jessie is Arch's daughter.  Also, that same Catherine died at 32 Sugarhouse Lane, (the home of her daughter) although I haven't identified Donald McPherson.  Then 10 Cross Shore Street is the address of Archibald and Christina in the 1861 census, though, again, I haven't identified Elizabeth McPherson.

The addresses are too close to be a coincidence.

As I write this, I'm thinking of other avenues to try.  Will be in touch.
