Sadly no  the original certificate clearly reads BARTLEY according to the registrar.

Pity but it was a long shot    Any chance the name may have been misheard and registered incorrectly?  To double check I would look for a David Bartley with wife Mary to rule them out "just" in case.

Perhaps your couple didn't marry.  Are they both single before they appear together as a "couple"

Well I can't see one so hope springs again but his name could be written wrongly too 

Can't see any births for Bartley in Swansea from 1854-1861 so it still might be your couple.

Hi Millie.
Just been doing the same. There is no David BARTLEY and Mary to be found other than what the GRO have on the Cert and register.
Not on the 1861 census .
It has to be as you have correctly  said.
It was misheard by the registrar.
I bet they were illiterate too so they didn't spot the error.

Well everyone I have ordered a copy of the cert from The GRO online. Expect the cert in the post towards the end of next week.  Anyone know why the PDF scheme doesn't stretch to marriages ??

I have received the Cert from the GRO.
The Bartley marriage  is in fact David Barclay . The certificate  has FOUR errors already corrected by the GRO. With the corrections initialled  and numbered by a supervising registrar. The problem with the name is down to the handwriting of the registrar. He tried to write with a flourish ...so on top of putting the information in the wrong boxes on the form he made a complete muck up of the cert. It would have been better for the supervisor  to rip up the original and make him do it again. On top of that 154 years later the registrar at Swansea still insists that the name is Bartley. !! The groom's father's name is also recorded as Bartley  but being a Charles and being deceased confirmed that it is in fact a Barclay.
