Passenger lists to USA 1871-80
« on: Tuesday 27 March 18 20:32 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping someone might be able to find when James Heptonstall (born c1816 England)  and his son James (born c1857 but might be nearer 1852) emigrated from England (Barnsley) to the USA.

I have them both on the 1871 census in England and am pretty sure I've found them both in Missouri on the 1880 census (James snr in St Louis and James jnr in Russell, Macon). I'm not sure if any of the rest of the family went with them.

By the way - Heptonstall: loads of strange spelling variations, including Hopkinstall, Heppenstall, Heptingstall, but they all seem to start with H and end in stall!

James Jnr Heptonstall also appears on the 1900 census married with children - sadly it gives no indication of immigration date.  James died 3 March 1903 - will post info in case an obituary could help.  They could also have immigrated via Canada, it was probably cheaper in that time frame.

FIND A GRAVE shows burial

Hi Sandra,

Sorry - I'd given myself a headache yesterday so switched the PC off early.

Yes, you were right to add the  ??? to your last post! I thought I'd got the right Heptonstalls in England to fit the 1880 US Missouri census. I should have been more bothered about James jnr's birthdate being about 5 years off but that often happens in censuses so I wasn't too bothered.

I'm really trying to find out when an Englishman called James Heptonstall born in May 1852 emigrated to the USA (forget the father - that was obviously an error). I'm sure he's the one we found in Macon, Missouri on the 1880 census and married Alice McKinney there in 1885.

Why don't the US censuses demand to know where in England these people are from??  ::)

Would a passenger list give this info?

I need to go back to the drawing board and locate this chap in England before he emigrated. Heptonstall is such a West Yorkshire name that I really thought I'd got the blighter! of course, there's always the possibility that he emigrated as a youngster with his family in which case, having been born in 1852 he'd be 8 by the time of the 1861 UK census and may already have departed!

I shall keep looking.

Thanks for your help, Sandra. Its all part of identifying a DNA match to someone in the USA - and this seems to be the only link they have to the UK so chances are its there somewhere!

Sadly we have to wait until 1900 for immigration dates to appear on US census, sadly James Heptonstall Jnr did not give that date.  Age could well be off, either they didn't know or someone else gave the information.  ::)

Thanks, Sandra.

They seem to be pretty certain on his birthdate: May 1852.

Taking the birth date much more seriously - there is only one contender on FreeBMD and that is James Heptonstall born JunQ 1852 in the Dewsbury Reg District, mother's maiden name Brown.

I've located him on the UK 1861 census in Millbridge, Liversedge, West Yorkshire, and his family were also there in 1851 before his birth. I am pursuing him!!!

Ideally we could do with an obituary for James Heptonstall which tells us where he might be from or who he belonged to   ;)
