I think the drunk enumerator may have been involved in dodgy tattoos as well.

I'll check what I have for them in the later years.

There was a Mersey ferry HMS Iris in Liverpool 1906 but there is little detail about it online.

Wow, now I know the words  ;D (loved the turtle neck sweaters!)

Maybe .... would it be normal to get a tattoo for working on a ferry (if that's what he was doing?). I've been looking for the missing censuses with no luck

No I can't find them either, just wondering if Thomas and Esther are dead. There's a death for a Thomas maybe he died just after Mont and Annies marriage...

GRIFFITHS, THOMAS        63
GRO Reference: 1895  J Quarter in MANCHESTER  Volume 08D  Page 154

and one for Esther...

GRIFFITHS, ESTHER        54
GRO Reference: 1888  S Quarter in MANCHESTER  Volume 08D  Page 185

Maybe it was a mans thing to get a tattoo but who knows. The other HMS Iris was in the  Portsmouth Reserve from 1887 to 1903 but I've looked in the Hampshire census's and did'nt find him. The other possibility that there is a really bad transcription error and he does'nt show as Griffiths.

Wow what a fascinating read!! Mont is my great great grandfather. I have been researching my family tree for a couple of years and just stumbled across this thread!
His mother and father being Thomas Edward Griffiths and Esther Whitchurch is correct.
An interesting fact is that his son Joseph, his grandson Thomas and great grandson (my father Joseph) all have tattoos of the same ship on their right arm! Never knew the origin until seeing the military record describing his tattoo!
I have spent a bit of time asking around and but cannot find the origin of Mont’s tattoo, but my best guess would be it was passed on from his father as the Iris was around for a good chunk of the 1800’s, but I have no records to prove this.

I’m a bit late to the party, but very appreciative of the information :)
