Thanks this is really helpful - loads of info to sift through! I can't see the shop on Capel Street anymore but will try to follow up...am interested to know more about the Huguenot connections mentioned.

ONE of Dublin's oldest pet shops, The Dublin Pet Stores, at 117 and 118 Capel Street, Dublin 1, is expected to make in the region of £350,000 to £400,000

The business has been run by the same family since 1845. Mr Gerald Roden plans to relocate his business to another premises in the city centre.

The Dublin Pet Stores should be easy enough to locate.

Well just to say thanks a million - I spoke on the phone to one of the family yesterday! An absolutely lovely lady in her eighties now. I'm going to send her and her son some photos I can't identify and who knows maybe I'll finally be able to put some names on the faces. Thanks again Hallmark and Dathai for your help.
