C Reg Birth results for Samuel Clarke from 1866 to 1875   http://www.rootschat.com/links/01luc/

If he was born and registered in Co Down it would be one of these Districts....

Thank you for that, we believe that he is the Clarke born Downpatrick on 22nd June 1865, to parents Bernard Clarke and Sarah Allan......Samuel and Susanna's first child was Samuel ALLAN Clarke, born at Murlough Lower, Dundrum, in 1897.......Their second child was Hugh Joseph Clarke, born Ardrossan, Scotland in 1900, after Susanna had fled there after the serious assault on her, by Samuel at Dundrum....Hugh Joseph Clarke is my wife's grandfather.....https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=2533&h=2579730&ssrc=pt&tid=29111460&pid=12135968592&usePUB=true

I did wonder if the Samuel Clarke, that died in 1919 at Trillick Street, Belfast, could be "our" Samuel.....I notice that he was given as married, which our Samuel would presumably still be, even though he tried to kill Susanna, and she was in Scotland......I assume that divorce was virtually unheard of back then, although there was a rumour in the family that when he came out of jail, he re-married, and had another family, but I have no evidence of this.....how would I find out, if indeed it is possible at all, who this Samuel was married too ?

I found that record for Samuel died 1909 back in 2014 for you  ::)

Whatever year he died there should be a death registration. I checked GRONI (1905-1909) and the closest to Dundrum geographically is a Samuel Clarke died 1906 (Downpatrick) but he's 74 years old.
Closest ones by age are both in Belfast:
Samuel Clarke, 23 March 1907 (age 47)
Samuel Clarke**, 15 March 1909 (age 45)
Belfast City Cemetery (G 171): Mr Samuel James Clarke**, age 45, 68 Trillick St., died 15 Mar.1909, buried 17 Mar.1909 (several others in same plot)

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If OP had looked at the details of who else was buried in the plot (I did say "several others in same plot") they would have seen 2 other Clarks and 1 other person with a different surname in the plot with Samuel James.
