Frederic Augustus John Justus
« on: Wednesday 28 March 18 19:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I'm looking for information regarding the colourfully named gentleman above. I know he married Julia Alexander in Oporto, in1897. Also, he can be found on incoming passenger lists to Liverpool. In these, he is F. Justus or Dr F.A. Justus. Apart from this, I can't find any other trace of him. Any help would be most appreciated.
                      Many Thanks

After posting this request. I have discovered a Friedrich Justus who was of German descent, who may have arrived in Portugal and set himself up as 'Dr Justus' and practiced as a dentist. This could be the man I'm looking for- maybe not. It appears that in the 1890s, and without any background checks, anyone could call themselves a 'Dr'. Just like they can today
                         Many Thanks

Hi Wayne,

That does sound promising!

I was looking at this the other day - though I posted, must have got way-laid

1894 Travel: for F A JUSTUS, age 27 (born abt 1867), Single, Merchant.
Ship Karlsruhe. Embarked Lisbon, landing at Southampton 5 Sep 1894.

Also found this, but unsure if connected...
TRAVEL 1875:
On the Ship "Argentina",  Hamburg to Lisbon, Departed 6 Sep 1875.
Traveling with Parents August (37) and wife Freiderike (37) , daughter Auguste (6), son Peter (4). The father is an "Uhrmacher" - a clock (or watch) maker.

The daughter travels again later:
Auguste JUSTUS 18, female, single (born abt 1866).
On the ship "Buenos Aires", Hamburg to Lisbon, Departed 6 Sep 1884.

I think, in both cases they are returning to Lisbon.

Your man…… have you seen the Aviator License for his son in 1917?
It gives an address in Lisbon which may be the family home:

1917: Son
Alexander Frederic JUSTUS
9/11 rue Funchal, Lisbon
Born 19 June 1899 Lisbon
Aviator Certificate issued at Bournemouth, 8 Sep 1917 (test taken in a Biplane)
(Includes a photo)

Cheers
