Alfred COCKS

Hello,

My father, Alfred COCKS, was born presumably in Cardiff on 05/04/1911, parents not known in the sense that I can find no validation through the various Indexes, FreeREG, GRO and so on.

It is thought that his mother may have been Elizabeth MILLER, born probably Roath 1890, and she married Albert Longfellow COCKS, born 1887 Cardiff, in June 1913.  My father had a sister Beatrice Mary also born out of wedlock in April 1913, but she is identified by the fact she bore her father's name COCKS.

My father married Irene May Margaret McREAVY in 1939 and they lived for a large part in St. Brides Major in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Hopefully someone can help, through a PM if felt diplomatic.

It does look actually that his birthname was Alfred Miller.There iis a record of a birth of an Alfred Mlller in the Cardiff District of Glamorgan in the June Quarter of 1911,Volume 11a,Page 439.

The GRO confirmed that an Alfred MILLER was born to Bessie MILLER at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Cowbridge Road, on 05/04/1911.

It would be helpful if Bessie MILLER was actually Elizabeth MILLER who married Albert Longfellow COCKS and that, somehow, it can be established that he was my father's father

Bessie is one of the many names Elizabeth may be called.I'm in quite a similar situation myself in that my Mother was born under her mother's maiden name before her Mother marrried someone the next year,

Did Albert and Elizabeth have other children.... including Horace, Florence, Albert, George and Barbara?

There’s an 8 year old Elizabeth Miller at 11 Robert St, Roath, in 1901, with siblings and mother Mary A (says married but she is head of household).

It looks as if Elizabeth was born in maybe Roath to mother Mary A Miller in c 1893.It looks as is she died in the Bridgend District in 1967.I would strongly wager after seeing the 1911 entry that she only took the name Bessie for the purposes of having Alfred at that Hospital.

This would appear to be Elizabeth’s birth.... Elizabeth Miller, registered in Cardiff, Sept quarter 1892, mother’s maiden name Thomas.

This ties in with her age on both the 1911 census and 1939 register.

Do you have Albert and Elizabeth’s marriage certificate, to know her father’s name?

Possible marriage of Elizabeth’s parents..... Mary Ann Thomas to George Miller, Bridgend, Sep quarter 1892.
