Jordin(?) in Castlebar Mayo before 1881
« on: Saturday 06 August 05 23:10 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a entry in the 1881 English census for Thomas Jordin b 1853 and his wife Ann Jordin b 1856 both born in Castlebar Mayo.

I am not certain that the surname is correct as entered by the enumerator  as the same family look to be JORDAN in the 1891 census.

I can find no trace of them in English records before 1881 and I wondered if anyone could find these two in any Irish records and confirm the spelling of the surname.

Many thanks,

Adrian

Hello Adrian,

Jordin. Grifiths Valuation. Co. Mayo. 1856-7
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php There were two Jordins in Co. Mayo at the time of the Valuation in the County. James and Thomas are both listed as having property at Lissaniska, West Ballynahaglish.

Best Wishes, Christopher

Christopher,

Thanks for the information.

Now I need to figure out whether I can make any connection between these two and the female relative who turns up in Liverpool in 1881.

Cheers,

Adrian

Hei There Adrian,

You may find it difficult to make the connection. It might be worth your while to look at shipping lists of emigrants from Ireland heading towards America. An unspecified number of people changed their minds and disembarked at Liverpool when ships stopped there to collect more emigrants.

All the best,

Christopher

Hi Adrian - just having a look at your message and trying to shed some light.

I couldn't see the family in Liverpool on the 1881 census.(The only Thomas and Ann Jordin I could find were in Cheshire)

Did they have any children born in England? If they did you could get a copy of the birth certificate which would give Ann's maiden name which may help.

If you had her name you could possibly try for their marriage certificate- either England or Mayo.

Hello Adrian,

No Jordins here http://www.familysearch.org. There are Thomas Jordans there. I wonder if the person who submitted the information thought Jordin a bit strange and substituted an "a" ?

All the best Chris

In 1901 census - not all Mayo is transcribed yet - see
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/
there are 175 entries for Jordan ( a few for Castlebar) and no Jordins. I think I would investigate Jordan.
Good luck
Heywood

Well done Heywood,

It was the 1881 Liverpool Census in which the name appeared as Jordin. There is a small chance the name was Jordin in Ireland but my last message was incorrect. An "i" was substituted for the "a". I agree with you Adrian and Heywood. I feel you would be more successful searching for Jordan.

Good Luck, Chris
