Additional information on the MacLAREN v. MacLAREN divorce - February 1911 >>

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZTR19110225.2.34

.... Mary MacLAREN is referred to here as a young woman (her husband, J.D.A. MacLAREN, as a middle-aged man ... and if as his death age indicates (born c. 1872), he was 38 or 39 at this time ) ?
The article also states there were five children of the union (rather than four as mentioned earlier).

This woman did not appear on an electoral roll until 1911 ... (when she was at a common address with her husband) - but it was under the name of Marie MacLAREN.  [Incidentally, "Marie" was the christian name used in the birth registrations of all of her children.  ??? ]
------

Wendy ... I think it's unlikely this is the Mary (MILNE) you seek.  ???   And although there is mention of "Oamaru", I don't get the impression from the newspaper articles, that the mother (of Mary) was actually resident there.
[Q:   Was (your) Agnes CRAIG a dairy farmer at Oamaru  ??. ]

Hi Minniehaha and Lucy2 - thanks for your postings.
A quick response in between hospital visiting.
Agnes CRAIG (the mother of Mary Milne that I am looking for) was married to James Keith Craig who died in 1901.  He was a farmer.
The 1905-06 ER shows her as a dairy farmer at North Road, Oamaru and again in 1911.  Living with her in 1911 was her dau Margaret Christina Craig, Spinster.
In 1922 she was living at 68 Fox st, Dunedin and from 1925-1935 she was living at 47 Fox st, Dunedin.
In 1909 freehold section 31, block 13, Trent st, Oamaru was sold on behalf of Mrs Agnes Craig (Nth Otago Times 1/5/1909).  The Oamaru Mail (30/4/1909) mentions a fire enquiry re Mrs Craig house at Trent street which was unoccupied for 2+months.  The 1911 ER shows her son David Craig living at Trent street, Oamaru.
From 1935 to the time of her death in 1942 she was living in Waimate, Sth Canterbury.
Must dash.
Wendy

Hi Wendy

Have found the burial of Marie McLAREN at Timaru Cemetery.   Died 1957 - aged given as 77 years - bc 1880 ??
  https://www.timaru.govt.nz/services/community-and-culture/cemeteries/cemetery-search?BurialId=34450

Somewhat surprisingly she is commemorated on the headstone with her (former) husband, James Duncan Alexander MacLAREN.  ???

But it seems (despite the Divorce) that this lady returned to her husband, as there was a twin birth to them in August 1916.
1916 /8014 - MacLAREN - Corrie Marguerite
1916 / 8013 - MacLAREN - N/R  (Stillbirth)

----

These are the other MacLAREN births >   (might any of these be MILNE family names )  ??

1902 - MacLAREN - Malcolm Carus Iaan
1904 - MacKAY* - John Keith
[ *  NZ birth Index listing (@ ancestry) shows John Keith MacKay MacLAREN - NZ BDM online in error - has MacKAY as surname although it comes up under a search of MacLAREN. ]

1906 - MacLAREN - Isabella Euphemia  [d. Isobel Euphemia PETRIE ]
1908 - MacLAREN - James Duncan Colin
1909 - MacLAREN - George Clyde

Thanks Lu.
Yes interesting that she returned to her husband.
None of the children's names appear to be MILNE family names.

Backtracking to Lucy Mary Hay Milne.  Wellington College advise that she appears to have been a Matron at Firth House 1935 - 1938.
Wellington City Council advise that a Vautier, F (Florence); arranged her cremation in 1965.  Florence's maiden name was Russell.  Florence Russell married Thomas Philip Vautier in 1905.  He died in 1932.  At various times Florence and Lucy were living at the same residence in Napier and Wellington ie from 1954 48 The Terrace, Wellington.  So far I can find no connection between Milne and Russell.

I have checked the ER from 1905-06 to 1957 for Marie MacLaren.  She was mainly living in Kaiapoi Timaru and Christchurch, however I did find her in 1919 in the Omaru ER at "Tullymett" Herbert, Oamaru.  (James Keith and Anges Craig lived in this area).
The Oamaru Mail 9/12/1920 has an advertisement advertising a "Clearing Sale at "Tullymett" Oamaru on Friday 10 December 1920 on instructions from Mrs M MacLaren.
The "Tullymett" farm was in the SIM family from 1884 till the death of Alexander SIM on 21 February 1912 when it appears from his probate record to pass to his son William Sim.  Another son was occupying the farm, John Sim, but he was deceased at the time that Alexander wrote his Will on 11 November 1910.
I then went looking for a Milne connection with the SIM family - which was negative.  On checking the NZ BDM Index I found a marriage for a Helen Spence Turfus to a Alexander William Sim in 1916. (Yet to do further checking for any family connection).
Jessie (Janet) Ann Meldrum Taylor married a James Turfus (Turpis) s/o Robert Turfus and Barbara Sinclair on 16 December 1896 in Oamaru.  James Turfus died on 21 May 1916 at Hazel Park, Weston.  The Turfus family is from Orkney.
Jessie Taylor is the dau of Christian nee Taylor and John Taylor - Christian is the sister of Agnes Craig formerly Milne nee Taylor who is the mother of Mary Milne.

An update.
I have just received the marriage certificate of Mary Milne and James Duncan Alexander MacLaren in 1900 in Christchurch.  Mary Milne was 21 years and born in Woolston, Christchurch.  Her parents were John Milne, Farmer and Margaret McKinley.

So not the Mary Milne I am looking for - back to the drawing board!
