Samuel Duffield b1795
« on: Friday 30 March 18 16:39 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help find the death of Samuel Duffield b1795 South Normanton Derbyshire England  He was transported to Tasmania in 1821 to the penal, colony.   He served his time and married a female convict in 1840 at Avoca.  His wife was Mary Cullingford.  but after they were free I think she changed her name to Martha as I have seen records for Martha Duffield
I have just found a death record for a Martha Duffield b c1803.   She died 27 / 5 / 1881 at Campbell Town  Tasmania.  I cannot find Samuel.  I doubt they had any children but it would be nice if they did.   After their freedom the trail seems to have gone cold.    I would be very grateful for any information.   Kid regards. Tineke

There's a Samuel Duffel, died Campbell Town 1870, but the recorded age of 88 isn't a good fit

Mention here of a Martha Duffell, Campbell Town, in 1878

No other results on Trove for those names in Tasmania

Just to note that Mary CULLENFORD was a widow before her marriage to Samuel. She was 32 (he was 49 in 1840).

Thanks for your reply.  I knew Mary was a widow. ,I,have copies of permission to marry and the marriage at Avoca in 1840.     It is just the information after they served their time which is lacking.  However I have contacted the library in Tasmania for information on their  deaths.   Many thanks Tineke

Even though the age is out, that sounds like a reasonable possibility - especially as Samuel was convicted at the Guard Room St James Palace and was a "soldier".

I meant to note also (although you probably know) that on "Martha"'s death reg it notes she was a "labourer's widow", so Samuel died before 1881.

Ah, thanks Matthew - didn't realise there was another thread on this couple. Always a good idea Tineke to link other threads to avoid doubling up research.  ;)
