Definitely military. The Police copied it.
Could do with a better image of just the helmet plate.
Possibly Leics. Regt. or King's Own Lancaster Regt. which looks a better fit.
Where did he live?

I have asked for a better scan and where the chap hails from.

The photo looks to be 1880's/90's & the white cuffs may denote Militia rather than full timer but someone with more knowledge may know better.

Good evening,

The style of cuff, jampot, tell us it is post 1881 and pre ww1. The colour of the facings, collar and cuffs, tell us it is a non royal regt. So not 1st to 25th foot as they were before 1881. Not Irish or Scottish either.

Tunic will be red with the white facings. The only real clue is the helmet plate but can't make out the centre badge in that plate.

Back again,

It looks to me like sphinx in the centre, used by several regts. Not Lincolnshires,Leicestershires or Lancasters, they are all royal regts so blue facings.

Possibles are Glosters, East Lancs and South Lancs who all had a sphinx.

I wondered about it being the Sphinx that's why I've asked for a better scan, however it seems to have a "tail" hence the King's Own.

The Leicestershire Regiment didn't become the Royal Leicestershire Regiment until 1946.
