Thanks Sylvia. Have found the article on Google which confirms her as the 1913-1968 Mary Means though odd how Mary F became M D Means on LOC. And it also implies she was the sole author of the books - unless Theodore was the unnamed roommate who may have helped her?

Funny how everyone draws their own conclusions.

I assumed that the roommate in 1949 was probably Virginia Dreier.  And I wondered whether the D might have come from Dreier (who knows how close these 2 ladies were in a time when views were a bit less tolerant. At the time of her death the D could have been omitted on purpose by Mary's family ).

Theodore could have stayed behind in Indianopolis (Note: the books were published in Indianopolis, so I assumed that this is where they had been written as well)

As you can see my imagination is rather rich and all of the above could be totally wrong ... LOL
