His Batt. info came from the Medal Roll.
The 8/N.Staffs diary for 16/5/17 has 25 OR's joining. It doesn't say where from but fits with MaxD's info re. the 2/4 Leics.
So he may have attested with the 2/4/ Leics. & transferred to the 8/N.Staffs along with other Leics. men & he may have been allotted a spare number originally given to the Dec. 1915 allocation.
I think you can see where this is going.
An almost impossible task without a service record.

Okay, had time to absorb it now (we as much as my brain will permit).

Next time I get one of these, I'll try to do it myself, post my findings and maybe one of you chaps will pop along and tell me what you think.

Really appreciate your time.

Thanks

Just to add to the confusion your man would have moved after Jan .1917 because his Leics. number has 6 digits & he would have been given this number at that time.
When he transferred he wouldn't have gone straight to the 8/N.Staffs because they were a Service Batt. not TF. His N/Staffs number was allocated to the 5th. which were TF.
This was the route taken by the man with number 235106 which is just 2 off your man's.
His record does survive, unfortunately he didn't.

In addition to the above 235106 (his name was Chas. Goodacre by the way) had a Leics. no. of 202980 just 7 off your man's. He transferred to the 5/N.Staffs 2/5/17. This was a TF Reserve Batt. it was here he was given the 235106 no. On the 25/5/17 he was posted to the 8/N.Staffs. I think that his 5/N.Staffs transfer was more administrative than anything else.
There were no transfers to the 8/N.Staffs between 17/5/17 & Sept. 1917. This man died July 1917 so one of the 25 that went there on the 17th. & it's taken a few days for the paperwork to catch up.
So it's possible your man took the same route but we'll never know for sure.

I think jim1's sterling efforts beautifully illustrate what I was trying to describe in my long post!
Good luck with your further research!
