The Freeman's Journal of 1 May 1866 reported William's release:
ADMITTED TO BAIL.
Mr. Stronge, divisional magistrate, proceeded yesterday, at three o'clock, to Mountjoy prison, and admitted to bail Patrick and William Hickey, of Kingstown, who have been for some time in prison under the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act. Each prisoner had to procure two householders as bails, each in 100l, and to enter into his own recognizance in 200l, previous to his release. Eden Lacy, also of Kingstown, was admitted to bail yesterday. Lacy, who is a native of Enniscorthy, county Wexford, has been in prison for a considerable time on suspicion of Fenian tendencies.Back in again, according to the Cork Constitution of 6 December 1866:
THE FENIAN CONSPIRACY - FURTHER ARRESTS. - KINGSTOWN, TUESDAY NIGHT. -
Five men were arrested here this morning by a party of the F Division Metropolitan Police Force, under Inspector Ryan, on a warrant signed by the Lord Lieutenant, charging them with being connected with the Fenian Conspiracy. Their names are John and William Hickey, John Clancy, John Rochfort, and Hugh Byrne. The two first-named are brothers, and were previously in custody on a similar charge ;And released again per the Evening Freeman of 7 February 1867:
ADMITTED TO BAIL. - Mr. William Hickey, a Kingstown tradesman who had been arrested some months since on suspicion of being connected with the Fenian movement, has been admitted to bail.
