Lix Head / Six Head CRITCHLOW
« on: Monday 02 April 18 07:34 BST (UK) »
Hi
Has anyone any knowledge of this area? I'm trying to work out my Critchlow ancestors. My 3 x great grandmother Mary Critchlow is stated in the 1851 census as being born in ????Head in about 1800.
I have found a lot of Critchlow families in the Alton and Farley area and wondered how big Lix Head was.
Many thanks
Sue

As the info posted by ShaunJ mntions Alton this may be her;

MARY Critchlow baptised 19 May 1800, Alton, Staffordshire to JOHN/JANE
(Familysearch.Org)

I presume she married John HOLMES 1820 Alton?
Hannah Critchlow was a witness
(FreeREG)

1861 Mary Holmes is born c 1802 Ramsor, 1871 c 1799 Ramsor (as indexed on Anc.)

Many thanks for your help. It's beginning to fall into place now. I think Mary's parents were probably John Critchlow and Mary Riley who married in Alton in 1799. She did marry John Holmes. I now need to find out who witness Hannah Critchlow was.

You've probably got an answer to this now, but here's a map of Lickshead (between 1845-1889) and a Google image of the same place now in case it helps.
There were lots of Critchlows in that area and John Critchlow (b 1806) certainly farmed at Lickshead (Lixhead) at that time
RATCLIFFE, BARLOW, BERESFORD, BLOOR, BYATT, DAKIN, KENT, LEES, MORTON, NORCLIFFE, OAKS, OSBORNE, PARKS, RICHARDSON, ROBINSON, SORTON, WETTON, WARRINGTON, WATTS, WOOD, WOLVERSCROFT (all from the Staffordshire Moorlands) - and specific interest in anyone who at any time lived in or around the village of ALTON

John CRITCHLOW b1806 was my 4 x great uncle.
Am gradually filling in the tree but there are so many CRITCHLOWs in the area
Best Wishes
