Family Name "DICKEY" from Derry.
« on: Monday 02 April 18 08:23 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone. Great grandad Samuel Dickey was born in Derry in about 1852 and emigrated to NZ as a Hairdresser. He passed away in 1933 aged 81 years old buried in the Addinton Cemetery. He married Hannah Dickey nee Bruce from Kinnitty County Offaly and there cottage is preserved at the Ferrymead Histroical Park in Christchurch NZ,known as the "Stewart Street Cottage" the oldest exisiting there on display.

Can someone please help if they know where Samuel Dickey was born (suburb, town ) what Parish or possible where did he go to school. Last of all what ship did he sail to NZ on. Thank you very much for any help. Shane Duffy.

"Born in Derry" can mean the city, anywhere in the county or even parts of Donegal or Tyrone near Londonderry City.
Civil registration of births started in 1864. To find Irish ancestors you really need a location (parish if not townland if outside the city) and religion to see if church records survive (not all that do survive are online).

When is the first time you can place Samuel Dickey in New Zealand? Any idea when he left Ireland? Does his marriage (1887) or death (1933) give any clues as to parents or place of birth?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

What info have you gleaned from his death certificate? I understand NZ ones were usualoy quite detailed.

ignore, already asked above.

As a general suggestion, and only helpful if he was named after a relative, a look at Griffiths Valuations for mid 1800s does not bring up that many folks with the combination Samuel and Dickey/Dickey, so it may be worth a look at those it does.

Thank you for the questions. I only have Samuel Dickey as being married aged 33 in 1887,St Saviours Church Sydenham Christchurch NZ  so he would've been born in 1854 and only records as being from County Derry Ireland. Not a mention of parents anywhere.
