what is the correct place name?
« on: Monday 02 April 18 09:12 BST (UK) »
Have been researching the SHELTON family.  Transcripts of their births, death, marriages in and around 1730 give a location of Wycombe & Chadwell.

It seems to a non-local that Wycombe & Chadwell are two separate towns/villages with one parish being St Mary.

However how do know which town the person was born in or any other milestone that occurred other than at the church.  Is the church proper located in Wycombe or Chadwell  or maybe neither?

Hi Westy,

Wycomb and Chadwell are two hamlets near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.
St. Mary's Church is in Chadwell see on this map from NLS Wycomb & Chadwell

Thanks Macwil; thus I am assuming when folk wanted their child baptised they would go to Chadwell for the child's baptism irrespective if they lived in Wycome or Chadwell?

That would be my supposition. The Parish of St. Mary's would undoubtedly cover both hamlets.

The only thing I can suggest for narrowing their place of abode is to try and find the Parish Registers. Not sure where they'll be. Leicestershire Archives and Records are located in one of my old schools in Long St., Wigston, Leics. I don't know if Melton Mowbray has a Records/Archives facility.

Hi Westy,
Our posts crossed. I've modified my post to include a link to the Archives. You could e-mail them to see if they have the registers or if they know their whereabouts. They may make a charge for look-ups, explain you are in Australia and unable to visit. If you can supply precise details they may do it for free, but don't bank on it, Our government are squeezing council budgets hard.

Regards,
Malcolm.

Hi Westy,

The map links I supplied have Chadwell on the edge of the map, this link may provide a better perspective of their location.

Hello Malcolm,

Many thanks for the idea.  its a good one.

Governments squeezing the 'common' people seems to be the way of the western world at the moment.  The alternative is not ensuring large businesses pay enough tax.
