Easton Magna/Great Easton
« on: Tuesday 03 April 18 14:57 BST (UK) »
As far as I know this village started off life as Easton Magna but at some point in the mists of time it was changed to Great Easton. I just wonder when this actually took place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't find an Easton Parva nor Little Easton locally so why the change?

I have a copy of a 1610 John Speede old map of Northamptonshire and it shows two villages called Easton, which are approximately 14 miles apart. One is near Stamford, now Easton-on-the-Hill, and the other, now Great Easton, formerly Easton Magna.

Some mid 19th century books refer to it as Great Easton, otherwise Easton Magna.

Hi David,

Thanks for that. I've seen Easton-on-the-Hill towards Stamford, Lincolnshire.

Often there were Parva & Magna villages such as Wigston and Ashby for example but a decision must have been taken by someone/body and as Parish Councils didn't come into being until 1894 I wonder who, why and when it happened here.
