Charles Baldwin west , otherwise Acland.
What does this mean? Is he known by both surnames or is it his mothers maiden name?
I have not come across this before.

I wonder if this is his baptism ??   Dunster 12 Jan 1777 Charles Baldwind Acland - mother Sarah - listed as a base child

Yes I think so, but what is a base child ? 1st and would it be possible that she married a West later and Charles took on this name?

A base child is baseborn i.e. illegitimate     It would look like his mother later married a West or it is possible he was adopted  :-\

As a 'base child' there is also a good chance that his mother gave him his fathers surname as a middle name (Baldwin) though it could just be a name passed down the family  ;)
